Interior designer Louise Bradley turned her London townhouse into a peaceful urban retreat. For Louise, who shares her home with her two miniature dachshunds, Bebe and Ellie, it had to be a place ‘that reflected the way I want to live’, where she could close the front door and be ‘transported away from city life.’

If a gold kitchen seems a little bold for the quiet suburb of Armadale in Melbourne’s south-east, then think again. In an audacious move which sets the tone for the rest of the space, architect and interior designer Rob Mills took the ultimate risk when designing his own family home. The home  in a former life was once a three-story warehouse which still maintains its warehouse-style  — albeit with an updated, modern charm.

Through their famous perfumes and renowned Residences throughout the Yucatan in Mexico, Francesca Bonato and Nico Maleville have succeeded in creating and sharing a lifestyle of understated luxury, one that is not about designer labels or material wealth. To them, it is the ability to connect to nature, to appreciate the feeling of sand under your feet, smell the natural fragrances in the air, or being able to see a star-studded sky. The Coqui Coqui Valladolid residence  is no exception. Built in the 16th century, the retreat sits atop the flagship perfumery in the beautiful colonial town of Valladolid. With views of the tropical garden, the elevated terrace has a private plunge pool and lounge area, pleasantly cooled by the fragrant breezes.

Between the Atlas mountains and the Agafay desert, French-Swiss designer Romain Michel-Ménière opened his personal passion project, the Berber Lodge hotel. A contemporary ‘village’ inspired by the architecture of Morocco’s historic settlements. Classic proportions were given a modern twist with enlarged windows and openings, allowing the tranquillity of the countryside to permeate within. Antique kilims, Moroccan tea trays and banquette seating are placed alongside Mid-Century Modern furnishings found in the flea markets of Morocco and Paris, and these in turn are offset by rattan furniture from Essaouira. Michel-Ménière has created a mix of traditional and contemporary via nature and a good dose of simply excellent taste. The gardens around the Berber Lodge are the work of Parisian landscape designer Arnaud Casaus, who used agave, pistachio and long grass as an unusual groundcover, set within an old olive grove.
